On Monday, October 30, two members of the Ashton Tweed Executive Team participated in the inaugural Hubert J.P. Schoemaker Classic golf tournament. The tournament was sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline in memory of Philadelphia biotech leader and former CEO of Centocor, Hubert Schoemaker. The event included golf, a dinner and a silent and live auction that raised over $320,000 for Melmark.
Melmark, a comprehensive multi-service agency for children and adults with developmental disabilities in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts, is a beneficiary long supported by Hubert Schoemaker as his daughter has resided at Melmark for twenty-five years. Melmark’s programs promote independence, self-awareness, and confidence, while offering participants opportunities to make friends and develop personal interests.
Ashton Tweed sponsored a hole at the Waynesborough Country Club in Paoli, PA and the White Manor Country Club in Malvern, PA. The event was so well-received, with a total of 220 golfers and 300 dinner attendees, that the tournament was expanded to two golf courses to accommodate the large turnout. Kevin Scanlon, one of the event’s organizers, expressed gratitude for the generosity of the sponsors and participants saying, “for an event to be this successful the very first year is amazing.”
Jim Rudman, Ashton Tweed CEO, was enthusiastic about the event. “The Hubert Schoemaker Classic was a great way to honor the memory of a man who has done so much to foster the biotech industry in Philadelphia and to contribute to an organization with significant meaning to him. Due to the event’s success, plans are already underway for next year’s tournament which will again be held at the Waynesborough County Club in Paoli, PA and White Manor Country Club in Malvern, PA. Next year’s event will take place on October 22, 2007.
