Using the 2014 Global Life Sciences Cluster Report from JLL, Forbes compiled the top 7 trends you need to know for success in 2015:

 

1. Global Innovation – The Patent Cooperation Treaty applications are increasing in Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean, indicating growing innovative output.

 

2. An Aging Workforce and Population – It’s estimated that by 2020, 2 million engineering and life science jobs will become open, mainly due to retirement.

 

3. Regulation and Taxation – Japan and the United States have the highest corporate statutory tax burdens (39.5% and 39.1%, respectively).

 

4. Education – The US has the highest percentage of the working population with bachelor’s-type degrees. But Korea, the Netherlands, the UK and Australia are catching up.

 

5. R&D Funding and Concentration – Confidence in biotech in the US has returned, with 2013 being a notable year for life science IPOs including 52 deals resulting in $7 billion.

 

6. Declining Barriers for Entrepreneurs – Barriers to entry in entrepreneurship have declined in most countries, especially amongst developed cities.

 

7. Differences in Labor Productivity –  Between 2003-2012, the labor productivity in developing countries increased 5% and only 1% in developed countries.
