UPS teams with Zipline, Gavi to deliver medical supplies using drones

UPS teams up with California robotics company Zipline and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, to test the use of drones to deliver medical supplies. Later this year, they will deliver blood to facilities in western Rwanda, a mountainous region where overland transport is difficult. The Rwandan government is looking to cut delivery timelines, because time is particularly valuable in blood logistics.

 

If successful, the model could be expanded to the delivery of other medical supplies, such as vaccines and treatments for disease. UPS is supporting the project through an $800,000 grant, while the involvement of Gavi prepares for the expansion into vaccines.
