Total venture investment dollars for biotech dropped by $4B in 2019 – from $17.9B in 2018 to $13.9B in 2019. The average round size also decreased, from $40.2M in 2018 to $36.7M in 2019. However, the numbers stayed well above 2017 levels and 2017 was a banner year for biotech venture capital.
In Vantage’s 2020 Preview, they state that the industry remains “well-funded and keen to deploy capital,” and note that “the trend towards mega-rounds” shows no signs of abating. Below are the top biotech money raisers of 2019:
