Barron exhorts GSK scientists to take ‘smart risks’

Hal Barron has detailed efforts to embolden GlaxoSmithKline scientists to take “smart risks” when developing drugs. The culture change is an effort to stop GSK researchers from making conservative decisions due to fear of failure.

To cut conservatism, Barron’s encouraging staff to take more risks. Decisions about whether a risk is justified now falls on the individual in charge of a program, rather than consensus, as it was done before. Ultimately, Barron hopes to double the proportion of development programs that end in approved drugs.
