Genentech turns 40 — and now it’s ‘Biotech Day’

Share

California legislators recently passed a bill to recognize April 7 on an ongoing basis as “Biotechnology Day” in California. April 7 is the date in 1976 when Genentech Inc. was born. Biochemists Herb Boyer of the University of California, San Francisco, and Stanford University’s Stanley Cohen had developed the technology to clone genetically engineered DNA molecules in foreign cells.

The company has gone on to help shape this life-altering industry and establish the San Francisco Bay Area as the world’s dominant biotech hub.
