Top 10 U.S. Biopharma Clusters GEN’s Annual Ranking of the Most Nurturing Regions
The same 10 regions top this year’s Top 10 U.S. Biopharma Clusters List as last year’s GEN List, but the top seven regions have shifted positions. The recovering venture capital market is one reason for these shifts. Another is the rise of NIH funding, which is currently one-third higher than last year’s.
GEN ranks regions based on five criteria: NIH funding, venture capital funding, patents, lab space, and jobs. Here are this year’s results:

4. San Diego
5. Maryland/DC Metro
6. Greater Philadelphia
7. Seattle
8. Raleigh-Durham N.C.
9. Los Angeles
