F.D.A. Chief Goes Against the Administration Stereotype
Scott Gottlieb, the commissioner of the FDA, was subject to skepticism when he came to the job. Pharma and medical device execs supported his nomination, while consumer and public health groups did not.
More than nine months later, Dr. Gottlieb has not only quieted some skeptics, he has also managed to keep industry supporters content and the president on his side. He has done so by protecting public health while also offering rewards to industry.
Dr. Gottlieb has briefed President Trump several times on agency issues like opioids and generic drugs. He has displayed a collaborative management style and holds town hall-style meetings before making decisions. He has promoted several agency veterans, but has also hired a few industry insiders for top positions.
