Scott Gottlieb confirmed to lead Food and Drug Administration

The Senate confirmed Scott Gottlieb, a physician and venture capitalist, as the next commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The vote was 57 to 42.

 

Gottlieb previously served as a deputy FDA commissioner and an official at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services during the George W. Bush administration. As commissioner, he’ll face pressure from President Trump to further accelerate the drug-approval process and take a more aggressive role in combating the nation’s opioid epidemic.
